Plastic-free Policy:
Japanese Tools Australia is an environmentally conscious company and we endeavour to eliminate plastics in as many parts of our business as possible. Your purchase will be shipped in recyclable non-plastic materials, and we re-use cardboard and paper wherever possible in our shipping process.
Exceptions to plastic-free policy:
Unfortunately, we are required to dispatch some express items in pre-paid satchels and in such circumstances we have no choice but to use a plastic satchel. Please keep in mind these satchels are 100% recyclable. Our suppliers also use plastic in their packaging of some products, and we do not remove these protective measures before shipping. We are considering strategies to eliminate these two remaining sources of plastic in our shipping process. As many of our items are hand-made, they do not arrive to us or to you with extraneous packaging, though this is not the case for all of our products.
Breakage in shipping policy:
We pack our shipments in specialised materials to ensure that our customers find them in the same condition that we send them. If you receive your products in a damaged condition, please email info@japanesetools.com.au with your order number and photos of the condition of the products within a week of collection. If an item is deemed to have been damaged in transit we will replace it with like kind at no extra shipping cost to the customer. If you are unhappy with the condition of your product and it has not been damaged in transit, please refer to our returns and exchanges policy.

This kit represents a greater than 20% saving over buying it's components individually. It includes:
- Shinto Rasp med/course 200mm
- Carving File Flat 100mm
- Carving File Half Round 100mm
- Spatula Blank x 1
Your hardwoods won't know what hit 'em.
As anyone who has tried to work with seasoned Australian hardwoods has learned, working with a number of our beautiful native species can have more in common with stone masonry.
The trick to getting a good result when shaping such hard timbers is, in short, to use abrasives and rasps - and the best rasps for heavy material removal are those made by Shinto.
Shinto rasps are made by peening a set of hacksaw blades together. These blades' exceptionally hard teeth last for years in any timber, while the gaps between them allow waste material to fall away from the work rather than clogging the blade. They are an absolute joy to use, and you will wonder how you ever did without it.
But once you have roughed in your shape, how do you get a beautiful glassy finish? Well, with a finer file - enter the Iwasakis!
The two smaller Iwasaki files are manufactured totally differently to the Shintos. They have had hundreds of tiny teeth milled into their surface that are profiled similarly to a plane blade, only at a much smaller scale.
These blades take tiny shavings off your workpiece, leaving behind a surface similar to what a plane blade leaves. No sandpaper is required - and this has fantastic implications for those looking to preserve crisp edges and detail in their work. Where abrasives can round off lines or exterior corners that have been painstakingly formed, using a hard file keeps that detail or even exaggerates it further.
This kit includes a flat Iwasaki as well as a half round Iwasaki for working interior profiles.
Finaly to get your eye in and give your hands the feel of them, we are including an Australian hardwood spatula blank. Roughed out from a selection of bull oak, dead finish and gidgee branches, this timber is hard, beautiful and sure to make you a beautiful implement!
