Build A Teahouse with Fujimoto Traditional Carpentry Company
Full Cost of this Course is $1250. Spots can be secured with a $200 deposit.
This three day course parachutes you into the shoes of a jobbing Japanese carpenter. Students will work as a team to build a small Japanese teahouse structure, with the work required to do so distributed in the same way as the Fujimoto Traditional Carpentry Company distributes work amongst it's carpenters.
The teahouse will be modelled on the first photo featured here. That particular example was built by Kimura Shinichiro of Mokkosha Carpentry Company. Our project will involve itself with just the structure, and won't be given walls, floors, roofing, foundations or embellishments at this point in time.
After orientation and instruction in the techniques needed to measure and mark precise joints at a structural scale, Ryo and Greg will assign each student a particular piece of timber with a prespecified role in the structure.
The joinery that will needed to be cut into each piece of timber will change depending on it's place in the teahouse. All students will get the chance to cut tenons and mortices or varying size and complexity. Some students will also get the chance to work on more advanced joinery components such as those requiring compound angles.
With all joints cut, the structure's frame will be raised as mortices and tenons cut by different students will come together to form the teahouse. Due to time restrictions there will not be the opportunity to fit flooring, roofing or walls, but these elements will also be discussed and instructed upon.
Students will sign the work with their own individual flourish. Japanese Tools Australia will be entrusted with this special tea house, using it to display the beauty and elegance of Japanese carpentry in our Sydney showroom and at selected events.
Ryo Fujimoto is the owner and master carpenter of Fujimoto Traditional Carpentry Company based in Kanagawa prefecture. Ryo's philosophy of construction centres on using natural materials, with traditional timber framing taking centre stage in his projects. Fujimoto Traditional Carpentry takes all of it's projects from design to completion in-house, and as the company's head, Ryo is a master of design, layout, logistics, ordering, marking, cutting, building and delivery. The chance to work on a structure under the direction of such an experienced and energetic carpenter is not to be missed.
Greg has spent the past three years working as a carpenter for Fujimoto Traditional Carpentry. Now and experienced hand on site and in the shop, Greg's recent seminar in the JTA workshop proved to be a goldmine of information and inspiration as he ran through the process that needs to be undertaken to design, mark, cut and build a traditional structure. This course represents the chance to take Greg's knowledge out of the world of theory and bring it together in the timber.
When: Friday 31 Jan, Saturday 1 Feb, Sunday 2 Feb 2020. 9am to 5pm.
Optional sharpening session will be held in the fortnight before the course for students to set up their chisel.

Japanese Tools Australia is an environmentally conscious company and we endeavour to eliminate plastics in as many parts of our business as possible. Your purchase will be shipped in recyclable non-plastic materials, and we re-use cardboard and paper wherever possible in our shipping process.
Exceptions to plastic-free policy:
Unfortunately, we are required to dispatch some express items in pre-paid satchels and in such circumstances we have no choice but to use a plastic satchel. Please keep in mind these satchels are 100% recyclable. Our suppliers also use plastic in their packaging of some products, and we do not remove these protective measures before shipping. We are considering strategies to eliminate these two remaining sources of plastic in our shipping process. As many of our items are hand-made, they do not arrive to us or to you with extraneous packaging, though this is not the case for all of our products.
Breakage in shipping policy:
We pack our shipments in specialised materials to ensure that our customers find them in the same condition that we send them. If you receive your products in a damaged condition, please email email@example.com with your order number and photos of the condition of the products within a week of collection. If an item is deemed to have been damaged in transit we will replace it with like kind at no extra shipping cost to the customer.
If you are unhappy with the condition of your product and it has not been damaged in transit, please refer to our returns and exchanges policy.
We stand behind the quality of our tools. If a tool is found to be faulty or damaged in transit, we will verify the issue with you, and offer a refund or exchange when the problem is brought to our attention within 30 days from purchase. If problems arise outside of this period this policy will apply at our discretion. Where a refund or exchange is agreed upon, we will mail you a paid addressed bag to return your items, verify their condition once we receive them, and then process a refund or mail the new item.
If a tool is purchased as a present or the purchaser changes their mind, we will exchange for stock of equal value or store credit when we are contacted within 2 weeks of the purchase. We ask that the customer covers the cost of shipping in these instances. We will take a payment for shipping over the phone, send you a paid addressed envelope, verify the goods' condition once we receive them, and then mail the new item.
If a tool is damaged through improper use, we encourage you to contact us. We may not be able to exchange the tool, but may be able to offer advice on technique or recommend a more appropriate tool. Where possible, we encourage our cutomers to ask us questions about our tools' use before they purchase them. We can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org or 02 9527 3870.
Sorry, we can't exchange gift cards.
