Each whole number on this face denotes a \u003cem\u003esun\u003c\/em\u003e (30.3mm), which is subdivided into 10 \u003cem\u003ebu\u003c\/em\u003e (3.03mm). On the short arm, the \u003cem\u003ebu\u003c\/em\u003e markings are further subdivided into half-\u003cem\u003ebu\u003c\/em\u003e markings for the first three \u003cem\u003esun\u003c\/em\u003e, and for the first five \u003cem\u003esun\u003c\/em\u003e on the long arm. The total length of the long arm is 10 \u003cem\u003esun\u003c\/em\u003e, equal to one \u003cem\u003eshaku\u003c\/em\u003e (30.3mm). \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDoes that seem like a lot to remember? Never fear! The reverse face of the sashigane displays the metric units that we all know and love, out to 15cm on the short arm and 30cm on the long arm.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePlease note that on both face of the sashigane, measurements are displayed against the outside of the sqaure only, not the inside of the square.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you are considering working in \u003cem\u003esun\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003ebu\u003c\/em\u003e, we recommend using that measuring system - and only that measuring system - for your project.
