Our popular Cerax range of water stones have always been popular with woodworkers. However, we also hear a lot from people who purchase our pocket knives asking if we have any sharpening solutions more appropriately sized for their needs.
New from Suehiro are Cerax Dual Stone whetstones that are compatible with either water or oil. This kit includes a flat 2500 grit Dual Stone whetstone attached to angled feet, a plastic sharpening tray designed to hold the stone securely and catch sharpening fluid, a 400 grit Dual Stone with grip, and a 500 grit diamond plate with grip.
Although the smaller Dual Stone and diamond plate seem to be of nominally similar grits, the diamond is much coarser than the Dual Stone. This is because the diamond surface contains much larger random particles which allows it to abrade material quickly. It is ideally suited to regrinding bevels and cleaning rust and pitted surfaces.
The 400 grit Dual Stone is an excellent intermediary grit that can be used to sharpen bevels before moving on the the final homing on the 2500 grit plate.
The 2500 grit plate measures 145mm long by 50mm wide and is 5mm thick. Each of the 400 and 500 grit accessories measure 100mm by 25mm. All components ship in a sturdy protective box that extends the kit's uses to work in the field as well as the shop.
These whetstones are completely unique in that they can be used with either oil or water as a lubricant and cutting medium. If you love using our Cerax waterstones, these can be used in exactly the same manner. Or if you prefer oil stones, they can be included in your toolkit and used alongside your Arkansas stones. If you change your mind, or would just like to experiment, oil can be added to a previously water-only stone, or an oily stone can be washed with detergent and put into service with water.
(PLEASE NOTE we do not recommend using oil on any other Cerax products - only the Dual Stone range)
