Japanese Tools Australia is proud to welcome back Hiroshi Yamaguchi for a three-day long weekend workshop (June 12, 13, 14) on Japanese joinery techniques. Please find full details in the pdf here.
Please note that the price above is a DEPOSIT ONLY. Full cost of the course is $990.

Hiroshi-san has put together an exciting three-day program with two joints, the chigiri (butterfly key) and neji-gumi (twist joint, or sunrise joint) that he enjoys using in his work. This course is designed to be accessible to woodworkers of all levels, and students of any skill will be able to complete these joints under Hiroshi's guidance.

Hiroshi has decided to use a box project to apply the two joints that will be covered in the class. The chigiri will be used to add decoration to the base of the box, while the corner joinery will be done with the neji-gumi.

The class will begin by using the Chigiri (butterfly joint). Although butterfly keys are a relatively common sight when reinforcing slabs, Hiroshi employs them to join two different timbers when making plates and other small objects.

The remainder of the course will be spent on the joinery of the box sides. The Neji-Gumi (twist-joint) is a fascinating joinery solution often employed in situations where Western woodworkers would usually use dovetails. Hiroshi will be running through the intricacies of this uncommon joint and students will cut their own.

As always, Hiroshi's profound knowledge of the technical and cultural sides of Japanese woodworking will shine through as he shares joinery techniques that he has practiced throughout his career in Japan and Australia.

Cost of the weekend is $990, and a $200 deposit will secure a place in this course. This price includes all tools, timber and materials as well as lunch on both days. As well as Hiroshi instructing, the JTA team will be taking part in the course, learning all we can and talking tools over the weekend. Look forward to seeing you there!

Covid-related developments that prevent the course going ahead, or your attendance in the course, will result in a full refund.
