We are very proud to have been invited to contribute to the program of the Sturt Craft Centre Winter School in 2021. Together with Wiggy, our regular teacher of all things Kumiko, we have put together a 5 day program to immerse you in Japanese hand tool woodworking. Bookings can be made through the Sturt Website here. Please note this course can't be booked through our site.
The week starts off with the basics, and a day of sharpening and tuning the Japanese plane and chisel every student will use through the course and take home at the end of it.
The second day is spent building a small Japanese tool box to store and protect the chisel and plane. This project is an exercise designed to familiarise students with their new tools and leave them feeling confident with basic joinery and finishing.
Finally, day 3 sees the start of the kumiko work. The day's project is an asa-no-ha coaster, using a square jigumi (frame). This is the same project that Wiggy delivers in his kumiko class in the JTA workshop.
With the simple kumiko complete, days 4 and 5 are focused on building a kumiko clock. This more advanced project uses triangular frames. Although not a simple exercise, the week of practice leading up to this work and Wiggy's expert instruction make it accessible to beginners.
