Netsuke - A Further Exploration with Hape Kiddle (February)
Please note that the above amount is a Deposit Only.
To make a small thing beautifully is a big undertaking.
Japanese Tools Australia is proud to welcome back Hape Kiddle to our workshop for a four day course on Netsuke carving. This longer format course will build upon and out from Hape's popular two-day course, which he ran in 2019.
Anyone who has been lucky enough to carve with Hape will be aware that his work is underpinned by his own unique philosophies connected to culture, place, material and form. In this long-format course, Hape will spend time with students exploring their own philosophies, ideas and values how these connect with their carving work. For those looking for extra motivation, enjoyment and meditation in their carving, these conversations promise to be fruitful and fascinating.
Toolmaking is another important aspect of Hape's carving practice, and when working on very fine pieces with a very specific vision, it is quite common to find that a commercially made carving tool is either not available to meet Hape's needs, or indeed non-existent. Hape makes his own carving tools from HSS drill bits, and students will get the chance to make their own tools with his advice and guidance.
Hape will also spend extra time developing the form of the netsuke with the class. As with the two day course, a fish is the subject matter for the class. Further time will be taken exploring possibilities for the form, with Hape discussing the skills related to seeing subject matter in a way that is truly useful to carvers.
Cost: $980. Spots in the course can be secured with a $200 deposit above.
Dates: Saturday Februay 22 to Tuesday February 25. 10am to 5pm.
Students will be provided with lunch and refreshments each day.
If you prefer to bring your own carving tools you are welcome to, and we will have a selection of core tools available for use or purchase on the day.
A $200 deposit above will secure a spot in this course. Full payment will be required before the commencement of the course, with flexible payment options available. Class size will be firmly capped at 10 students.

Japanese Tools Australia is an environmentally conscious company and we endeavour to eliminate plastics in as many parts of our business as possible. Your purchase will be shipped in recyclable non-plastic materials, and we re-use cardboard and paper wherever possible in our shipping process.
Exceptions to plastic-free policy:
Unfortunately, we are required to dispatch some express items in pre-paid satchels and in such circumstances we have no choice but to use a plastic satchel. Please keep in mind these satchels are 100% recyclable. Our suppliers also use plastic in their packaging of some products, and we do not remove these protective measures before shipping. We are considering strategies to eliminate these two remaining sources of plastic in our shipping process. As many of our items are hand-made, they do not arrive to us or to you with extraneous packaging, though this is not the case for all of our products.
Breakage in shipping policy:
We pack our shipments in specialised materials to ensure that our customers find them in the same condition that we send them. If you receive your products in a damaged condition, please email email@example.com with your order number and photos of the condition of the products within a week of collection. If an item is deemed to have been damaged in transit we will replace it with like kind at no extra shipping cost to the customer.
If you are unhappy with the condition of your product and it has not been damaged in transit, please refer to our returns and exchanges policy.
We stand behind the quality of our tools. If a tool is found to be faulty or damaged in transit, we will verify the issue with you, and offer a refund or exchange when the problem is brought to our attention within 30 days from purchase. If problems arise outside of this period this policy will apply at our discretion. Where a refund or exchange is agreed upon, we will mail you a paid addressed bag to return your items, verify their condition once we receive them, and then process a refund or mail the new item.
If a tool is purchased as a present or the purchaser changes their mind, we will exchange for stock of equal value or store credit when we are contacted within 2 weeks of the purchase. We ask that the customer covers the cost of shipping in these instances. We will take a payment for shipping over the phone, send you a paid addressed envelope, verify the goods' condition once we receive them, and then mail the new item.
If a tool is damaged through improper use, we encourage you to contact us. We may not be able to exchange the tool, but may be able to offer advice on technique or recommend a more appropriate tool. Where possible, we encourage our cutomers to ask us questions about our tools' use before they purchase them. We can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org or 02 9527 3870.
Sorry, we can't exchange gift cards.
