Plastic-free Policy:
Japanese Tools Australia is an environmentally conscious company and we endeavour to eliminate plastics in as many parts of our business as possible. Your purchase will be shipped in recyclable non-plastic materials, and we re-use cardboard and paper wherever possible in our shipping process.
Exceptions to plastic-free policy:
Unfortunately, we are required to dispatch some express items in pre-paid satchels and in such circumstances we have no choice but to use a plastic satchel. Please keep in mind these satchels are 100% recyclable. Our suppliers also use plastic in their packaging of some products, and we do not remove these protective measures before shipping. We are considering strategies to eliminate these two remaining sources of plastic in our shipping process. As many of our items are hand-made, they do not arrive to us or to you with extraneous packaging, though this is not the case for all of our products.
Breakage in shipping policy:
We pack our shipments in specialised materials to ensure that our customers find them in the same condition that we send them. If you receive your products in a damaged condition, please email info@japanesetools.com.au with your order number and photos of the condition of the products within a week of collection. If an item is deemed to have been damaged in transit we will replace it with like kind at no extra shipping cost to the customer.If you are unhappy with the condition of your product and it has not been damaged in transit, please refer to our returns and exchanges policy.
Description
Description
Netsuke are small, often intricately detailed carved objects that were traditionally used to secure the strings of inro boxes and hanf those boxes, bags or baskets from the belt of one's robes.
Today, netsuke is a form favoured by carvers for it's manageable scale, open design possibilities and scope for detail and expression.
We at JTA have offered blanks for specific netsuke designs for some years, however, these simple blocks are intended to offer you, the carver, the raw material and nothing more. Supply your own design, and discover what is waiting for you in these beautiful timber blanks.
We are offering these blanks in three different timber species. From easiest timber to the most demanding, we would order them; jelutong, huon pine and Japanese boxwood.
Jelutong is an incredibly easy timber to carve, but still able to hold great detail. It is extremely approachable, however, the lack of interesting grain that makes it so easy to work also means it can lack visual appeal as a finished object. You will need to rely on your eye and hands for that wow-factor. Our jelutong was felled locally in NSW.
Huon pine is a beautiful carving timber that we have used in our spoon blanks for many years. However, the Huon we are using in these blanks is a tighter grain than we have normally offered. This makes it heavier, harder, and more challenging on the hands. The tradeoff is that it will yield a beautiful piece with tight, intricate grain and a gorgeous golden hue. There are some beautiful netsuke indeed waiting to be unearthed in these pieces.
Finally, our boxwood blanks are the hardest on offer, as well as being slightly smaller than the blanks in the other two species. We have sourced this boxwood in small sections from Japan, It is clear, free from knots, tight-grained, and sourced on the small island of Mikura-jima, 200km south of Tokyo in the Pacific Ocean.
Boxwood is a favoured timber in Japan for the carving of Netsuke. According to Carving Japanese Netsuke for Beginners by Robert Jubb;
"My favourite wood for carving netsuke is boxwood. It is very slow growing and therefore close-grained and very strong, enabling detailed carving in any direction. Boxwood is hard to carve, but very rewarding. When freshly cut, its colour is creamy yellow. This gradually goes darker with age to become a rich honey colour."
By giving Australian carvers access to three different species of timber in the appropriate sizes (including a beautiful Aussie native), the appreciation of small, beautifully crafted objects will take even further root in the carving community.
