Sharpening Evenings in the JTA Workshop
Last year we had a great time running sharpening sessions in the workshop. We encourage you to use these sessions as an impetus to bring out those tools that aren't getting the love they need, to problem solve tools that aren't performing as they should, and an excuse to sharpen with a bunch of friendly people in a relaxed atmosphere.
We'll be running all of these sessions on weekday evenings from 6pm to 9pm at the JTA workshop (29 Production Av, Kogarah).
Initially we are only opening up FOUR spots in each session. As numbers are so limited, we ask that any individual book only one of these evenings at a time.
We will also be running these evenings with a little more structure than previously by focusing on a particular tool type in most sessions. They will take the following form:
Setting up a Japanese Chisel - for those who are yet to do so, we will show you how to set the chisel hoop, lap out the back on a steel plate and bring it to a polish, and sharpen the bevel. You're also welcome to bring already tuned Japanese chisels that just need a sharpen.
Japanese Plane Setup - if you own a Japanese plane, but believe it isn't performing to it's full potential, we'll be on hand to run an eye over it and see if we can't get it behaving a bit better. Depending on what your kanna needs we'll be lapping the backs of blades, sharpening bevels, bedding blades, tuning soles, seating chipbreakers and eventually taking shavings. It's gonna be fun!
Carving Tool Sharpening - carving tools are funny things. Different profiles, bevel angles, leading edges, sizes, shapes and the direction of the wind can all make a difference to the behaviour of your carving tools, so we'll be on hand to walk you through our preferred methods of maintaining the edges of your profiles. Bring down your full set, and we'll see how far we can get through them.
Run What Ya Brung. This is the old format. Bring down whatever you want to sharpen, JTA will put out the stones and we'll all natter away while turning our hands black with slurry. Where would you rather be?
Women's Only Session - We'll be running a session for women only, with a focus on a relaxed environment and making all aspects of sharpening as accessible as possible. All tools and knives welcome, and no such thing as a silly question.
Please note that any cancellations due to flu-like symptoms will receive a full refund with no questions asked. As we don't have a fancy thermometer at the shop, please be responsible when deciding on the state of your health before coming down. We'll be happy to book you in for the first spot in a future sharpening sessions.

Japanese Tools Australia is an environmentally conscious company and we endeavour to eliminate plastics in as many parts of our business as possible. Your purchase will be shipped in recyclable non-plastic materials, and we re-use cardboard and paper wherever possible in our shipping process.
Exceptions to plastic-free policy:
Unfortunately, we are required to dispatch some express items in pre-paid satchels and in such circumstances we have no choice but to use a plastic satchel. Please keep in mind these satchels are 100% recyclable. Our suppliers also use plastic in their packaging of some products, and we do not remove these protective measures before shipping. We are considering strategies to eliminate these two remaining sources of plastic in our shipping process. As many of our items are hand-made, they do not arrive to us or to you with extraneous packaging, though this is not the case for all of our products.
Breakage in shipping policy:
We pack our shipments in specialised materials to ensure that our customers find them in the same condition that we send them. If you receive your products in a damaged condition, please email email@example.com with your order number and photos of the condition of the products within a week of collection. If an item is deemed to have been damaged in transit we will replace it with like kind at no extra shipping cost to the customer.
If you are unhappy with the condition of your product and it has not been damaged in transit, please refer to our returns and exchanges policy.
We stand behind the quality of our tools. If a tool is found to be faulty or damaged in transit, we will verify the issue with you, and offer a refund or exchange when the problem is brought to our attention within 30 days from purchase. If problems arise outside of this period this policy will apply at our discretion. Where a refund or exchange is agreed upon, we will mail you a paid addressed bag to return your items, verify their condition once we receive them, and then process a refund or mail the new item.
If a tool is purchased as a present or the purchaser changes their mind, we will exchange for stock of equal value or store credit when we are contacted within 2 weeks of the purchase. We ask that the customer covers the cost of shipping in these instances. We will take a payment for shipping over the phone, send you a paid addressed envelope, verify the goods' condition once we receive them, and then mail the new item.
If a tool is damaged through improper use, we encourage you to contact us. We may not be able to exchange the tool, but may be able to offer advice on technique or recommend a more appropriate tool. Where possible, we encourage our cutomers to ask us questions about our tools' use before they purchase them. We can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org or 02 9527 3870.
Sorry, we can't exchange gift cards.
