At JTA we are proud of our order turnaround times and work hard to ensure the best possible service.

We are NOT a drop-shipping company and hold all of our stock in Sydney. We dispatch every weekday, and we are usually able to dispatch orders received before 12pm on the same day. If you urgently require your purchase we suggest that you select express shipping at checkout to ensure we prioritise your parcel.

Shipping Charges:

We have revised our logistics systems to offer the best possible postage price to our customers. All prices are in $AUD.

Within Australia:

Regular Post: $9.50, tracking number emailed to you at dispatch

Express Post: $16.50, tracking number emailed to you at dispatch

Within New Zealand:

We are now able to offer our New Zealand customers $15 flat-rate shipping on orders under 2kg.  For orders heavier than 2kg the following rates apply:

<2kg: $15

For orders over 5kg in weight, please email us at info@japanesetools.com.au

Prices for all other international orders are calculated at checkout according to Australia Post’s standard rates.

Please be aware some international countries may charge additional taxes when your order goes through customs. Prices on the JTA website do not include these charges and it is the customer's responsibility to cover this.

Delivery Times inside Australia:

These are estimates only. All orders are sent with a tracking code via our shipping app Shippit, and we recommend you use this to check on your order's progress.

From the date of dispatch we expect the following delivery times within Australia:

Regular Post: Within 3-5 business days (metro areas) or 4-8 business days (rural areas)

Express Post: 1-2 business days (metro areas) or 2-4 business days (rural areas)

Plastic-free Policy:

Japanese Tools Australia is an environmentally conscious company and we endeavour to eliminate plastics in as many parts of our business as possible. Your purchase will be shipped in recyclable non-plastic materials, and we re-use cardboard and paper wherever possible in our shipping process.

Exceptions to plastic-free policy:

Unfortunately, we are required to dispatch some express items in pre-paid satchels and in such circumstances we have no choice but to use a plastic satchel. Please keep in mind these satchels are 100% recyclable. Our suppliers also use plastic in their packaging of some products, and we do not remove these protective measures before shipping. We are considering strategies to eliminate these two remaining sources of plastic in our shipping process. As many of our items are hand-made, they do not arrive to us or to you with extraneous packaging, though this is not the case for all of our products.

Breakage in shipping policy:

We pack our shipments in specialised materials to ensure that our customers find them in the same condition that we send them. If you receive your products in a damaged condition, please email info@japanesetools.com.au with your order number and photos of the condition of the products within a week of collection. If an item is deemed to have been damaged in transit we will replace it with like kind at no extra shipping cost to the customer.

If you are unhappy with the condition of your product and it has not been damaged in transit, please refer to our returns and exchanges policy.

Description

This gorgeous example of the Japanese knife maker's art has been hand-forged on Goto Island by Haruko Miyazaki.

Using the technique of warikomi, Miyazaki san has inserted a blue paper #2 (aogami #2) cutting edge steel into the softer stainless backing. This give this knife it's distinctive high and wavy lamination line.

This, combined with the high initial grind of the main bevel that reaches 25mm across the blade and the angular "kiritsuke" style forehead, give this knife an beautiful look and very purposeful shape.

This knife is finished with a hammered pattern on the sides of the blade and a Magnolia handle with buffalo horn bolster.

Dimensions:
Overall Length: 365mm
Blade Length: 205mm
Handle to Heel: 30mm
Spine Thickness: 2.8mm (above heel)
Spine Thickness: 2mm (3cm from tip)

About the maker and his process:

Haruki Miyazaki is a talented young blacksmith working on Goto Island. JTA customers will be familiar with the work of his brother Koichi Miyazaki, who makes traditionally coopered wooden buckets that we are proud to feature in our workshop.

Haruki Miyazaki-san studied for five years in Fukuoka prefecture under the famous smith Toshio Oba. Since opening his own forge, Miyazaki-san has built a reputation on using traditional techniques to forge knives of incedible quality and beauty.

Miyazaki-san makes his knives one by one entirely by hand. The technique of Warikomi that Miyazaki has used in this knife requires the soft steel to be heated and split, and then have the hard steel inserted, reheated and forge welded.

In this way, this knife has been made from two pieces of steel rather than a three piece san-mai construction, which is more common.

The warikomi process gives Miyazaki-san the highest level of control over the edge, and also ensures that the spine of the knife is entirely made up of strong, ductile steel.

Of course, Miyazaki's heat-treatment, grinding and sharpening of his knives are also carried out by him and entirely by hand.
