Step into the world of woodcarving and create something truly special! Spend a generous 4.5 hours learning how to carve your very own small wooden bowl or dish - a perfect blend of function and art, with plenty of time to work through each stage and really make it your own.
Your guide in this journey will be Rachel Shaw, a South Coast-based woodcarver with a passion for blending traditional techniques with modern style. Specialising in crafting beautiful, functional pieces like spoons, butter knives, pickle forks, and small dishes, Rachel transforms salvaged and reclaimed wood into one-of-a-kind creations.
Whether you’re a total beginner or looking to reconnect with your creative side, Rachel will teach you everything you need to know, from shaping your design to smoothing and finishing your piece. One of the most surprising things about this style of carving is how little you need to get started. Just a couple of tools, a kitchen table, and you’re away - everything fits in a drawer, making it one of the most apartment-friendly crafts around. No shed, no workshop required.
As part of the workshop, you’ll also learn the basics of tool sharpening and timber selection, giving you a more complete understanding of the craft to take away with you. Carving dry timber does require a little wrist strength, but nothing a beginner can’t handle with the right technique, and Rachel will make sure you have it!
By the end of the session, you’ll take home your own beautifully hand-carved small bowl or dish, ready to be admired, gifted, or put to use.
Includes:
• Timber for you to carve
• The use of all tools required for the duration of the workshop
• Organic food safe wood finish
• Cold drinks and a sweet treat
What to bring:
• If you’d like something more substantial, feel free to bring your own snack!
What to wear:
• Closed-in shoes
• Clothes you don’t mind getting dusty
• Full length pants preferred
This class is for 16 years +

JTA Class Cancellation Policy
JTA Class Cancellation Policy
A huge part of designing our showroom - JTA HQ in Kogarah, was with the intention to create a beautiful workshop space. And over the years we have been lucky enough to host some incredibly talented local and international teachers.
Classes are often limited in number, meaning they do often sell out quickly. We encourage you to leave your email for an automated notification if any additional spaces become available or please feel free to contact us directly on info@japanesetools.com.au.
We understand circumstances sometimes change and if you need to cancel a booked spot we will offer a no questions asked refund 14 days prior to the class date. Any time closer to the class date, we will have to fill the spot first before offering a refund.
If you simply forget the class date or are a no show on the day, we cannot offer a refund or credit.
As we are hosting the classes for our teachers – Tools Bucks cannot be used towards the classes, and although some teachers may offer a discount on multi-day courses, this is not a general rule across all classes.
We can't wait to welcome you into our space to learn a new skill and craft. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us on 02)95273870.
