Kanaban - Steel Lapping Plate
Kanaban - Steel Lapping Plate
Our lapping plates (called kanaban in Japanese) are engineered to our specifications in Sydney. They utilise a mild steel to keep them affordable, and can be used with abrasive powders, films and slurries to lap the backs of high carbon steel tools (ie: Japanese tools) flat.
Our preferred method is to scrub a #1000 waterstone across the top of the plate to leave a slurry, and use that slurry to lap away. Shapton's fine, medium and coarse powders also do an excellent job, but we only use the fine grit when preparing new blades.

210 x 75 x 16mm
Weight: 1.9kg
This plate is highly susceptible to rust. It will ship to you with a light coating of oil wrapped in rust deterring paper. We recommend that it is washed before first use, and dried after use and returned to its original paper.

Decided to experiment with a new kanaban using grease based grinding paste - Chemico coarse and fine - to avoid rust.
Really interesting feel of the tool on the plate - the grease seems to suck the tool down onto the flat reference surface, avoiding the skating you can get on diamond stones. And of course a LOT cheaper than diamond plates.
Not having to apply pressure is a huge bonus.
Let’s see how this goes over time but initially impressed.
FANTASTICO… i did not nit even know about this product untill attending the chisel sharpening course. …well worth the investment
For a long time I’ve Been lapning on diamond plate but this Way of lapning the back of chisels and plane blades it super easy its not that messy. The water management is a bit learning curve but the result is really worth it
Came as expected. I’m very impressed with the quality of the product.
This is coming from the gift recipient…
Fantastic!
Well packaged in rust proof paper but arrived with slight scratches in the surface. Hasn't seemed to affect usage.
Kanaban works well, very slow on western chisels with shapton fine powder but the kanaban hasn't seemed to show any wear which is pleasant to see. Overall happy with the product, definitely does well holding a slurry
This lapping plate is a wonderfully simple and fast way of achieving a very flat and polished surface on edge tools. I like being able to choose the type and grit of abrasive used.., I have even used it to prepare the back of a new single bevel Japanese kitchen knife with fantastic results
Ordered on Saturday night arrived tuesday morning. Awsome service and jig is incredible. Very simple to use and quality results. Use dry hard wood only for best results.
Exactly what I expected. A few technique issues but easily sorted
As advertised - very flat. Not having to regularly dress a stone when flattening and polishing the back of a new blade has been great. Fast postage and great service as always.
