About Japanese Tools Australia

Japanese Tools Australia was founded in 2009 by furniture maker Christian Timbs, with a simple belief: the right tool can transform the way you work.

Christian’s journey with Japanese tools began through his years of training and working as a furniture maker in England, Tasmania and Japan. During this time, he developed a deep appreciation for the precision, craftsmanship and traditions behind Japanese toolmaking.

What began in 2009 as a small selection of Japanese saws, chisels and sharpening stones, offered from Christian’s workshop in southern Sydney, has grown into one of Australia’s leading destinations for Japanese tools and craftsmanship.

Today, JTA brings together a carefully selected collection of Japanese woodworking, gardening, kitchen, carving and specialist tools, alongside sharpening equipment, tool care products, books and other objects that celebrate Japanese making traditions.

We look beyond simply finding good tools. Every product is selected for its quality, function, longevity and the story behind how it is made. We work closely with Japanese makers and suppliers to bring tools to Australia that are designed to be used, maintained and enjoyed for years to come.

Our philosophy is simple: choose fewer, better things.

Japanese tools are the result of centuries of accumulated knowledge, refined techniques and a deep respect for the materials they work with. From a hand-forged chisel to a beautifully balanced pair of garden shears, these tools are made with purpose — and that purpose is ultimately realised in the hands of the person using them.

At JTA, we are proud to share that tradition with Australian makers, craftspeople, gardeners, chefs, artists and enthusiasts. Whether you're a professional tradesperson, an experienced maker or simply discovering Japanese tools for the first time, our goal is to help you find tools that make your work more enjoyable.
