Description

The 50cm x 25cm Traditional Sashigane Carpenter's Square is a symbol of precision and craftsmanship in Japan, utilised in daily workshop tasks. This square embodies centuries of refined design, offering unique features that set it apart from its Western counterparts. Both arms are perfectly flush and inherently flexible, allowing you to lay the square flat against a workpiece for accurate marking.

A key design innovation is the sashigane's profiled cross-section: the edges of each arm are subtly thinner than their middles. This clever detail prevents traditional ink marking tools from bleeding and smudging along the square's edge, ensuring every line is crisp and clean. The square is intentionally thickest at its corner, a robust design that also allows for precise adjustment should it ever suffer a mishap.

Most notably, one side of this sashigane features standard centimetre markings, while the reverse side reveals three specialised scales. The long arm includes a mortise gauge for accurately measuring the depth of mortises or trenches. The short arm boasts a pi-based scale, enabling swift calculation of the largest square section obtainable from a round log. Finally, the long arm also incorporates a Pythagorean scale, an invaluable aid for measuring and calculating roof pitches and complex angles.
