Japanese Smoothing Plane - 58mm

Brought a smoothing plane 58mm and I’m So happy with my purchase, super sharp and worked perfectly as soon as I had it setup with heaps of help from the videos , planning to buy more items soon

Nice clean planing tool. I practised for hours on some scrap Redwood seeing how thin I could get the shavings, 0.5mm was the thinnest I got. May need some stone honing yet.

So you have to fit and finish this plane yourself but once done it is a joy to use . There is something a little majgical about a wooden plane that the Japanese have never lost. . Customer experience terrific . I got to meet some of the team at the Sturt school event a few weeks ago . Most helpful. Highly recommend this plane and buying from jta.

Of course tuning on the blade is necessary.

Well made tool. Blade and chipbreaker were VERY VERY tight in the body and took a LOT of hammering to release.

This kakuri hand plane is excellent value for money and does a really good job. I like the simplicity of them. I will probably end up purchasing the entire range over the next few months to add to my collection!

Such an amazing tool, with a little fine tuning it it possible to create an amazing finish to your piece, very happy!

It's my first kanna, and it seems brilliant. I'm having a lot of fun tweeking it, both the blade and the body.
For something that looks simple next to a European plane, it is surprisingly sophisticated.
Postage was fast, so thumbs up there too JTA.
And thanks for the info you sent me on old Japanese chisels, so I could determine the quality of my 30 yr old ones, bought new when I was studying Furniture Making in Britain.

It may be me but I am having much trouble in getting the blade and chip breaker to the mouth. In fact, I have been unable to get the blade alone to the mouth. I spoke to Christian and he offered some suggestions but I don't feel comfortable making severe changes to the housing. I am thinking of asking Christian to have a look at it to see if it is OK.

An excellent product. I am really looking forward to many smooth jobs.

An absolute pleasure. I have a couple of Veritas planes, but these Kakuri planes are much lower cost and give an excellent finish. While not as easy as a Western style plane to setup, the learning curve is worth the effort.

I haven’t used Japanese Kanna Planes before so this is a first wanna for me. So far, it has been very easy to use and I can see why people get so into these planes. It was simple to set up although, I’m not yet getting those tissue paper thin shavings, I think that will come with practice.

I bought the GIKOH RYOBA SAW 240MM and the RENTETSU CHISEL 24MM MADE WITH 100 YEAR OLD ANCHOR CHAIN and they are awesome, easily the best tools I have used. Looking forward to hopefully buying the other sizes of the Rentetsu chisels.

This plane is superb. I am a mere novice & have been reusing 8-yr old merbau (turning old decking into furniture) & find merbau a bit tough to work with. This plane easily gives a better finish than high-grit sanding; I have fallen in love with the Japanese plane. I should also mention the great service from Japanese Tools; I make orders from Perth and receive the goods within days. I've already ordered more tools!

As with all Japanese woodworking tools, quality is high, blades are sharp.

My first kanna, and a great entry point I think. A useful width, and quality build that we know and expect from Kakuri. Takes great shavings, better in softwoods though from my experience. I found mine was almost ready to go out of the box, it’s very easy to shave too much off the dai and create a loose fit as I did.
For the money, I’d consider upgrading to the aogami iron model.
JTA have an awesome YouTube channel with a dedicated series covering the setup and maintenance of a kanna - I watched these many times over!
As always, top notch service from the JTA crew, can’t rate their service enough

Quality of the plane was excellent

The plane took about 45 minutes to set up, the online instructions were very good in this regard.
ut of the box the plane produces very fine shavings, and a very smooth finish.
