Why woodworkers love them
Made for the work a big plane can't reach
Instrument makers, box makers and Kumiko woodworkers use them for the fine shaping and chamfering a full-size plane is too big for.
01
Solid ebony bodies
Each plane is made from a single piece of dense, oily ebony, so it glides over the work and holds its shape for years.
02
HSS blades at 64 HRC
High-speed steel blades take a fine edge and keep it, with a brass screw that makes setting the depth of cut quick and precise.
03
14 profiles, one size
Flat, bevel, round and curved soles in a 90mm body that sits in the palm of your hand. Pick the shapes your work needs.

Loved by makers
From luthiers to leatherworkers. Real reviews from JTA customers.
“I love these little things, I have my own business doing a lot of fine, detailed work and this line of planes are perfect for what I'm doing. It's only a matter of time before I purchase the full set.”
“Great little plane that was sharp out of the box. I'm using it for the chamfered ends on Kumiko pieces.”
“Don't let the size of this mini plane fool you, fits in the palm of ya hand comfortably. I used it on the guitar neck and had no issues.”
“My second No 1 flat. I bought my first mini plane around 2 years ago and loved it. I use it for shaping ribs for acoustic guitars.”
“A real pleasure to use, and in the work it sees with me (bamboo fly rod building) it just nicely fits a particular need.”
“Perfect for finishing the edges on leatherwork projects before sealing and completing.”
Questions
How does the saving work?
Mix any profiles you like. 3 or more Mini Ebony Planes in your cart and every plane is 5% off, 6 or more and it's 10% off, and the full set of 14 is 15% off. It's applied automatically at checkout.
Which profiles should I start with?
Most people start with the No.1 Flat for general trimming, the No.5 45° bevel for consistent chamfers and a round profile like the No.2 or No.3. The 'Best-selling 3' button adds exactly those.
What are they used for?
Fine detail work where a full-size plane is too big: instrument making, box making, fine furniture, Kumiko, model making and leatherwork edges.
Where are they made?
They're designed by Kakuri in Japan. Because ebony became hard to source there, they're now made by a Hong Kong workshop with over 35 years of experience in traditional tools, then return to Japan for quality control and packaging.
Do they need setting up?
They arrive sharp, but like any plane you may want to fine-tune the blade depth and hone the edge to suit your work. The brass screw makes adjustment easy.
