Toyama Hamono has been making shears in Sanjō, Niigata, one of Japan's great blacksmithing towns, since 1861. Founder Ryūmatsu Toyama, a craftsman from Wakasa, forged his first shears from metal reclaimed from old warships, and the business has passed down through five generations of the Toyama family ever since.
Each generation added something: Tomijirō developed shears for cutting metal in the 1880s, Hidekichi founded Toyama Hamono Works in 1906 and brought in drop-forging, and Hidehisa and Hideo turned the workshop towards bonsai and ikebana shears in the mid-20th century. In 2020 fifth-generation Hidenobu brought the family businesses together as Toyama Hamono Co., Ltd.
Every pair is still finished by hand, one at a time. Toyama shears have won a Good Design Award, and in 2023 they were named Sustainable Garden Product of the Show at the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show.

Crafted for precision and comfort, these handmade Japanese secateurs are ideal for general garden use—perfect for pruning small branches, flowers, and houseplants. Each piece is hand-forged and sharpened using traditional techniques, resulting in subtle, beautiful variations.
The handles are wrapped in premium cowhide leather, offering a tactile and secure grip that only improves with age. Exposure to sweat, sun, and sap will develop a natural patina over time, making each pair uniquely yours.
Produced by Toyama Hamono—respected Japanese makers of blades since the 1860s—these secateurs are drop forged and honed to a razor-sharp convex edge. They come in a boxed perfect to store away.
Care and Maintenance
Avoid cutting hard, dead, or woody material. Do not sharpen the back of the blade, as it may cause damage. To extend the blade’s life, wipe clean after use with a light solvent/lubricant. We recommend Yanipika and camellia oil for best results.
