What happens when you take the most beloved garden knife in Japan and make it even easier to carry? You get the Nisaku Yamakodachi Short Hori Hori – “Yamakodachi” meaning “mountain small sword” – a compact, serrated blade crafted for the outdoors. It’s the ultimate blend of practicality, portability, and purpose-built performance.

This compact version keeps everything you love about the original: the concave blade for digging, a razor-sharp edge for slicing, and a serrated opposite side for sawing through roots and stubborn weeds. What it loses in length (just 70mm), it makes up for in versatility.

Sized to slip into your everyday gardening kit, this smaller Hori Hori is perfect for potting, weeding, cutting string or roots, and even taking with you on hikes, bushcraft outings, or foraging adventures. The included sheath protects your fingers and your blade – and conveniently loops onto your belt for hands-free carrying.

It is made from rust-resistant stainless steel staying sharp for longer – even when left in a garden bed and rediscovered weeks later (true story). The varnished hardwood handle feels great in the hand, with balance and control to spare.

This is what we love about Japanese tools: simplicity, durability, and craftsmanship that earns its place by your side, day after day.

    Gift

It was bought as a gift for the gardener, but she hasn't used it yet.
Quality looks great but as to whether it is fit for purpose, I can't answer that.

    Versatile and Effective Gardening Tool

I have this in two sizes, both are fantastic for various gardening tasks including cutting, sawing and digging up plants. It is very well finished and I highly recommend it.

5 star too but not for the left handed

I really like this tool for weeding.
My only gripe is there is no left handed version available. The serration is on the wrong side of the blade.
I can work around it but it’s not ideal .
Sorry but if there was a left handed version, i would give it 5 stars
