Kakuri Smoothing Plane - 58mm

Regular price $79.00 AUD

This Plane is a traditional Japanese style plane which cuts on the pull stroke. The blade and chip breaker are held in place by compression and is adjusted with a Japanese hammer or wooden mallet. The blade is made from white paper steel laminated with soft iron. The plane's body is made of Japanese White Oak.

In general, traditional Japanese planes require maintenance to the sole. This plane has been relieved behind the blade and is ready to use. It does not require tuning.

Specifications:

Blade Width: 58mm

Plane Body Length: 255mm

Plane Body Width: 75 mm

In regards to Japanese smoothing planes; please note that the sole of the plane has been prepared ready for use as a smoothing plane and so no adjustments are required for this, however timber planes may need some adjustment purely because of the nature of wood moving (expanding and contracting). Plane sailing

So you have to fit and finish this plane yourself but once done it is a joy to use . There is something a little majgical about a wooden plane that the Japanese have never lost. . Customer experience terrific . I got to meet some of the team at the Sturt school event a few weeks ago . Most helpful. Highly recommend this plane and buying from jta.

Kakuri smoothing plane

Well made tool. Blade and chipbreaker were VERY VERY tight in the body and took a LOT of hammering to release.

Hi John, Thanks for letting us know. It sounds like your plane will need some tuning to get it working to its full potential - it should be possible to carry out fine adjustment of the blade with gentle taps on the blade or back of the plane body. If you'd like more detail, please copy this link into your browser to view our pdf: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0122/9422/files/JTA_Plane_Tuning_Instructions.pdf?3456691718065241398 This covers only seating the blade itself, we are still developing instructions for the chipbreaker. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch. Happy woodworking, The JTA Team

Great value for money

This kakuri hand plane is excellent value for money and does a really good job. I like the simplicity of them. I will probably end up purchasing the entire range over the next few months to add to my collection!
