At JTA we are proud of our order turnaround times and work hard to ensure the best possible service.

We are NOT a drop-shipping company and hold all of our stock in Sydney. We dispatch every weekday, and we are usually able to dispatch orders received before 12pm on the same day. If you urgently require your purchase we suggest that you select express shipping at checkout to ensure we prioritise your parcel.

Shipping Charges:

We have revised our logistics systems to offer the best possible postage price to our customers. All prices are in $AUD.

Within Australia:

Regular Post: $12.50, tracking number emailed to you at dispatch

Express Post: $19.50, tracking number emailed to you at dispatch

Within New Zealand:

We are now able to offer our New Zealand customers $17 flat-rate shipping on orders under 2kg.  For orders heavier than 2kg the following rates apply:

<2kg: $17

3kg: $27

4kg: $32

5kg: $35

Express Courier International:

Flat Rate - AU$35 on orders up to 2kg (4.4lbs)

For orders over this weight:

<3kg: $62

<4kg: $67

<5kg: $74

For orders over 5kg in weight, please email us at info@japanesetools.com.au

Prices for all other international orders are calculated at checkout according to Australia Post’s standard rates.

Please be aware some international countries may charge additional taxes when your order goes through customs. Prices on the JTA website do not include these charges and it is the customer's responsibility to cover this.

Delivery Times inside Australia:

These are estimates only. All orders are sent with a tracking code via our shipping app Shippit, and we recommend you use this to check on your order's progress.

From the date of dispatch we expect the following delivery times within Australia:

Regular Post: Within 3-5 business days (metro areas) or 4-8 business days (rural areas)

Express Post: 1-2 business days (metro areas) or 2-4 business days (rural areas)

Plastic-free Policy:

Japanese Tools Australia is an environmentally conscious company and we endeavour to eliminate plastics in as many parts of our business as possible. Your purchase will be shipped in recyclable non-plastic materials, and we re-use cardboard and paper wherever possible in our shipping process.

Exceptions to plastic-free policy:

Unfortunately, we are required to dispatch some express items in pre-paid satchels and in such circumstances we have no choice but to use a plastic satchel. Please keep in mind these satchels are 100% recyclable. Our suppliers also use plastic in their packaging of some products, and we do not remove these protective measures before shipping. We are considering strategies to eliminate these two remaining sources of plastic in our shipping process. As many of our items are hand-made, they do not arrive to us or to you with extraneous packaging, though this is not the case for all of our products.

Breakage in shipping policy:

We pack our shipments in specialised materials to ensure that our customers find them in the same condition that we send them. If you receive your products in a damaged condition, please email info@japanesetools.com.au with your order number and photos of the condition of the products within a week of collection. If an item is deemed to have been damaged in transit we will replace it with like kind at no extra shipping cost to the customer.

If you are unhappy with the condition of your product and it has not been damaged in transit, please refer to our returns and exchanges policy.

Description

Designed to aid makers of Noh masks, an extremely demanding traditional carving craft, his 18mm curved gouge is designed for excavating across and with the grain while leaving an exceptionally clean surface. It's HSS blade is of exceptional quality, able to be resharpened and capable of taking an edge for an exceptionally long time. The long timber handle provides ample space for hands of all sizes to manipulate the tool with control.

Spoon carvers, vessel makers and whittlers will enjoy it's great cut quality and ease of use. To sharpen, we recommend touching up the outside bevel only, and leaving the interior. This tool can be honed with strops or buffing wheels. For those without those resources, we recommend cutting into some scrap wood to match the profile of the blade, and adding slurry from a medium waterstone (we find the #1000 Cerax works really well). By running the bevel across the matching profile impregnated with sharpening compound, an excellent edge and finish is able to be achieved.

This tool ships with the blade dipped in protective lacquer. We recommend removing the lacquer with methylated spirits or other solvents, but please note that anti-rust care measures should be observed.

Spoon gouge

This is my first time carving and using a gouge. It was awkward at first but once I figured it out it was perfect! Creates beautiful curves.

Another great tool in the arsenal

The gouge is a real joy to work with, complements other carving tools to achieve great results and also great to use on its own if it's the only gouge you have for spoons and bowls. Highly recommend picking one of these up.
