How to choose your grits
The basics
What the grit numbers mean
The lower the number, the coarser the stone. #120–#600 removes metal fast to fix chips. #1000–#2000 sharpens a dull edge. #3000 and up refines and polishes it.
Our suggestion
A simple two-stone kit
For most chisels, plane blades and kitchen knives, a #1000 plus a #3000–#6000 covers everyday sharpening. Add a coarse stone if you restore old tools, and a #8000+ if you want a mirror finish.
Often forgotten
Keep them flat
Waterstones dish as you use them, and a hollow stone puts a rounded bevel on your edge. A diamond plate flattens them in a few strokes. Learn more about waterstones.
Questions
Can I mix brands?
Yes. Choose any stones in the builder, from Suehiro, Naniwa, Shapton or Atoma, and the saving applies across them all.
How is the saving applied?
When you add your kit, we apply the kit saving to your cart automatically: 10% for two stones, 15% for three or more. You will see it on the stones in your cart and at checkout.
Do I need a coarse stone?
Only if your edges are chipped, badly worn, or you are setting up new tools. For keeping sharp tools sharp, a medium and a fine stone are enough.
Do I need a flattening plate?
If you sharpen regularly, yes. Keeping your stones flat keeps your bevels flat. A diamond plate is the quickest way to do it, and it lasts for years.
What if I change my mind?
Unused stones can be returned within 14 days. See our returns policy.
Not sure which stones you need?
Tell us what you sharpen, chisels, plane blades, kitchen knives or garden tools, and we will suggest the right pair of grits.
