The Cerax combination water stone range offers accessible all-round solutions for honing and sharpening edged tools. Manufactured by Suehiro in Niigata Japan, Cerax stones are renowned for their fast cutting surface and longevity.
The short step between grits on this #1000/#3000 stone makes it easy for the sharpener to move between the two, achieving a well honed and polished edged. The #1000 stone is ideal for touching up blades that have dulled through general use, while the #3000 stone will put a polish on already tuned edges and achieves a pleasing level of sharpness.
Suehiro's Cerax range is widely used across the wood working and culinary professions. These stones are made from slow-wearing ceramic particles packed inside durable binders that are capable of abrading both high carbon steel and hard tool steels, including chromium and vanadium alloys.
For best results, soak each stone for 5-10 minutes before use and allow to dry afterwards. Do not soak stones as prolonged immersion in water can cause the binder to deteriorate.
We recommend regular flattening with a lapping plate. We make our own using glass plates and adhesive backed sandpaper. Click here to view glass plates, and here for adhesive sandpaper. Both of the sharpening surfaces of this combination stone measure 187mm x 63mm.

Firstly, I am new to waterstones. However, I bought a #320 and the #1000/#3000 and #1000/#6000 Ceraxes for what I felt was a complete sharpening package with a double up on the #1000 as I felt this would get the most use. I was not disappointed.
The #1000 does a great job of ensuring a razor sharp edge, with the #3000 providing a fine honed/polished for all knife needs.

first time using a water stone - what a great invention....

Have hardly used it so far. The 1000 side brought up a nice fine edge on a carving knife but seemed softer than I expected but there again I'm not used to them.
I do leatherworking and have a lot of cutting, chiselling (we call it skiving), bevelling and carving tools that need to be kept razor sharp. Many are high carbon steel and these water stones work like magic. You were recommended by a friend and I will also highly recommend you to others.
After a long time debating the cost of purchasing my first set of waterstones, I decided to give Japanese tools a call, I spoke with Christian for at least 40 minutes on the pros and cons of purchasing waterstones. Christian took the time to explain to me how to get the maximum use from my chosen item, I ended up going for the Cerax #1000/#3000 as an entry level item, I never felt under any obligation whatsoever to buy, this was refreshing, in the end, I bought not only the stone, but a ruler and ruler stop to take advantage of the free postage. Delivery was prompt and well packaged.

Practical and typically well-made sharpening kit. A new experience after 40 years of oil stones. First results indicate that a fine edge will be easily achieved with little practice.
