Okatsune was founded in the 1940s in Hiroshima by blacksmith Tsuneichi Okano, who began his apprenticeship in 1925. The company still specialises in one thing: garden shears and secateurs made to be used every day by professional gardeners and farmers.
Okatsune blades are forged from Izumo Yasugi steel, a high-carbon steel from the region long associated with Japanese sword making. Hardened carefully, it takes a very sharp edge and holds it well. The tools are simple, strong and easy to sharpen, and the red-and-white handles make them instantly recognisable in gardens and orchards across Japan and around the world.

Keep your secateurs and garden shears razor sharp with the Okatsune Whetstone. Designed with a grit rating of #400, this whetstone is ideal for maintaining the edge on Japanese gardening tools, especially those made of high carbon steel.
To use, simply soak the stone in water before sharpening, then apply gentle, even strokes along the blade. Its compact size makes it perfect for both quick touch-ups and more thorough blade maintenance—without the need for heavy pressure.
Whether you’re restoring the edge on your Okatsune pruning shears or tidying up your snips after a long day in the garden, this whetstone is the essential tool to keep your blades performing at their best.
