Discover the beauty and precision of traditional Japanese bamboo weaving under the gentle guidance of Tomoko Taira and Aya Oataki, accomplished Kyoto-based takeami (bamboo weaving) artisans. In this hands-on workshop, you'll be introduced to the fundamentals of working with bamboo while learning Yotsu Ami—one of the most important and enduring weaving techniques in Japanese craftsmanship.

Tomoko-san and Aya-san founded the Miyama Bamboo Club, dedicated to preserving and sharing the traditional weaving techniques that have been practised for centuries in the historic thatched village of Miyama, Japan. Their teaching offers a rare opportunity to learn directly from artisans committed to keeping these time-honoured skills alive.

Yotsu Ami, meaning "four-eye weaving", is named after the open square pattern created by the intersecting vertical and horizontal bamboo strips. Although deceptively simple in appearance, achieving even spacing and consistent tension across the weave requires exceptional precision and years of practice. This foundational technique forms the basis of countless traditional Japanese bamboo crafts.

Prized for its lightweight strength and breathability, Yotsu Ami has long been used to create practical everyday objects, including cooling mats for hot summers, traditional rattan pillows and beautifully crafted storage baskets. During the workshop, you'll gain an appreciation for both the practical and artistic qualities of this versatile technique while creating your own woven piece to take home.

Each 2.5-hour workshop includes all materials, expert instruction and light refreshments, making it a wonderful opportunity to experience an authentic Japanese craft in an intimate, welcoming setting.
