Atoma Diamond Plate - #400
Atoma Diamond Plate - #400
Diamond plates are arguably the most important part of the hand sharpening setup—second only to the sharpening stones themselves. Whether you’re flattening a waterstone or regrinding a blade, a high-quality diamond plate is indispensable.
Atoma Diamond Plates are our go-to for both performance and consistency. Available in #140, #400, #600, and #1200 grits, these plates handle everything from aggressive metal removal to fine scratch refinement. The coarser grits (#140 & #400) are excellent for re-establishing bevels on woodworking tools or flattening dished waterstones.
Two things matter in a diamond plate: cutting performance and flatness. Atoma excels in both. The diamond abrasive is long-wearing and fast-cutting, and the aluminium substrate is consistently the flattest we’ve found—critical for both accurate bevel work and waterstone flattening. A diamond plate that isn't flat will throw your entire sharpening process out of alignment.
For heavy reshaping or repairing chipped blades, the #140 is an aggressive performer—but caution is needed when using it on delicate high-carbon knife edges. For those wanting more control and less bite, the higher grits provide more subtlety while still removing material efficiently.
Atoma plates are also available as diamond sheets, allowing you to reuse a substrate or mount your own. That flexibility, along with their overall durability, makes them a lasting investment in your sharpening workflow. You can find more information on that here.
If you're looking to elevate your sharpening game—with faster grinding, reliable flattening, and long-term precision—Atoma diamond plates are an essential addition to your kit.

I can't justify the top tier JP chisels; but the Orie Nomi extends the current range of JP chisel set and sitting next to my Lie Nielsen , Bacho and Robert Sorby chisel sets the JP chisels tend to reach my hand first.
Using the plate gives my wet stones a true flatness which shows in the end result of my planes and chisels
These Atoma plates are widely regarded as the best value for money diamond plates out there. Being new to diamond plates, this was initially a great purchase and the perfect waterstone flattening solution.
Unfortunately I killed mine through user error, so a word of warning: don’t sharpen using lots of pressure, and definitely DO NOT flatten coarse (<#400) waterstones with it.
No fault of the diamond plate, I’ll be replacing it with another Atoma asap.
Doing exactly as advertised cut my sharpening time in half
Great tool to flatten my whetstones. Gentle and did not make the stone rough. YouTube video was a great guide to select the right plate
Perfect really. High quality, very well made.m and true. Well packaged. Highly recommended.
Very happy with the product has met all expectations
This diamond plate is perfect for flattening my whetstones. I used the sandpaper/glass for a while but spending the extra on the diamond plate was well worth it. So much quicker and easier to do the job and cleans off easily. Thanks JTA for your advice and great products as always!
I have been very happy with my atoma 400. I have used it for flattening Shapton Pro 320, 2000 and 8000 stones with much success.
I can see the stone lasting many many years
The Diamond Plate is great for keeping my Japanese water stones flat. I am a retired bookbinder and used to make my own knives. Now I use my water stones for keeping my kitchen knives sharpened. They are a joy to use!
A great item out of the box. Nice flatness and made a huge difference in the finish at the higher grit because it kept the flatness of the courser water stones. A noticeable difference to the chisel and plane iron sharpness.
Was a little disappointed with this product I owned the plastic one before this one and wanted to buy a steel one so it would last longer. I tried it on edge tape that hadn't been trimmed and it worked fine, but once I tried it on an edge that had been slightly trimmed but needed just a small amount of clean up it failed quite badly. I wanted to return it but I had already tossed out the package, so I tried to sharpen it but it still failed so now I guess I'm stuck with it.
Great recommendation by Mitch. Previously I had purchased lesser quality plates for flattening which were giving me undesirable sharpening results. This diamond plate has made sharpening easier and more accurate on my water stones.
Helping keep my tools super sharp so I can make lots of beautiful things.
It cuts fast, was reasonably priced and lasts forever while staying flat.
As usual the quality from Japanese tools was exceptional
