Diamond plates are arguably the most important part of the hand sharpening setup—second only to the sharpening stones themselves. Whether you’re flattening a waterstone or regrinding a blade, a high-quality diamond plate is indispensable.

Atoma Diamond Plates are our go-to for both performance and consistency. Available in #140, #400, #600, and #1200 grits, these plates handle everything from aggressive metal removal to fine scratch refinement. The coarser grits (#140 & #400) are excellent for re-establishing bevels on woodworking tools or flattening dished waterstones.

Two things matter in a diamond plate: cutting performance and flatness. Atoma excels in both. The diamond abrasive is long-wearing and fast-cutting, and the aluminium substrate is consistently the flattest we’ve found—critical for both accurate bevel work and waterstone flattening. A diamond plate that isn't flat will throw your entire sharpening process out of alignment.

For heavy reshaping or repairing chipped blades, the #140 is an aggressive performer—but caution is needed when using it on delicate high-carbon knife edges. For those wanting more control and less bite, the higher grits provide more subtlety while still removing material efficiently.

Atoma plates are also available as diamond sheets, allowing you to reuse a substrate or mount your own. That flexibility, along with their overall durability, makes them a lasting investment in your sharpening workflow. You can find more information on that here.

If you're looking to elevate your sharpening game—with faster grinding, reliable flattening, and long-term precision—Atoma diamond plates are an essential addition to your kit.

Water stone dresser

I needed a slightly larger and coarser diamond plate to dress my water stones. The extra width and length allows me to get a quick flat surface without the chance to inadvertently 'cup' the surface of the water stone by running it off the edges of the diamond plate.
It has allowed me to quickly rejuvenate a damaged stone I had.

Great coarse diamond stone

Very use full for getting rid of large chips without needing much time at all, just make sure you don’t use too much pressure though as this will quickly kill the stone

A must have for dressing and chip removal.

For year's I used a coarse DMT for flattening my stones until it was stolen. So I got an Atoma. Works fine. Not as tough as the DMT because the Bond to the substrate is not as good but good value for money. Don't use a lot of pressure on Atomas though. You will kill it very quickly if you do. I only use mine to flatten stones and flatten chisel backs.

As a farm slaughterman my knives get worked every day in harsh conditions. I wanted a fast stone to create a Burr in my prep for sharpening..
I chose the 140 atoma, Once Broken in act more like a 300.
No time I have an Apex that I can begin my sharpening progression.. I don't have hours to spare and need my knifes ready for work again..
The atoma are a quality diamond plate that I use in my sharpening regression..
Until I'm finishing on a black Arkansas..

Diamond sharpening plate

I primarily purchased the diamond sharpening plate (300/1000 grit) to true the tormek Japenese water stone in conjunction with tormek sqauare jig, and performed to my satisfaction. The plate is flat enough to do the task and had no trouble truing the hard water stone. I would recommend this product.

300 / 1000 diamond grit place is a nice solid, flat and wide plate ideal for honing woodwork planes and chisels giving an excellent result. The non-slip holder is well designed.

Diamond Sharpening Plate #300/#1000

I have only had a chance to use this plate once as a flattening stone on the 300 side and a sharpening stone on the 1000 side . Very responsive both sides i must admit . The #300 side i will have to give further try as an initial bevel/ repair blade with but i think this side so far it will be used as a flattening stone though do intend to purchase one specifically for that purpose a little bit wider. The #1000 side i am sure will get more use in the 1000 grit area for knife sharpening , found its fast and feedback is good.
