STAR-M has been making woodworking drill bits in Miki City, Japan's historic home of blacksmithing and hardware, since 1923, when founder Motoji Kobayashi began crafting bits in a small workshop. The STAR-M trademark followed in 1940, and the company is still led by the Kobayashi family today. It celebrated 100 years of drill making in 2023.

From the Short Machine bit of 1958 and the Impact Bit series of 1996 to today's Super Clean Cut range, STAR-M manufactures its drill bits, carbide-tipped bits and custom-made drills at its factories in Miki. Japanese carpenters and woodworkers choose them for clean, accurate holes and edges that last, and STAR-M bits are now used around the world, including in the USA under the WoodOwl brand.
