Description

Date: Sunday 27th September
Time: 1:00 – 4:00pm
Location: JTA - 29 Production Ave, Kogarah NSW

Discover the timeless beauty of Fuki-urushi (Wiping Lacquer), a traditional Japanese finishing technique which involves repeatedly applying and wiping away raw urushi lacquer with a cotton cloth, allowing the wood's grain and texture to remain visible while strengthening and protecting the piece. As seen on Japanese Laquerware pieces.

Designed for experienced woodworkers, this hands-on workshop offers an in-depth exploration of the Wiping Lacquer process. Participants will learn the fundamentals of applying Fuki-urushi to fine-grained timber before progressing to techniques for highlighting highly figured wood, working with coloured urushi, polishing Fuki-urushi surfaces to a refined finish, and completing work with decorative maki-e detailing.

Your teacher during this comprehensive workshop is Ai Shimizu, a Kyoto-based Kintsugi practitioner and artisan who has exhibited her work and teaches regularily in Japan, France and Australia.

Throughout the workshop, each participant will complete and take home two beautifully finished wooden cups and one additional lacquered artwork, along with a Fuki-urushi starter kit to continue practising these traditional techniques at home.

This intensive class provides a rare opportunity to gain hands-on experience in one of Japan's most elegant lacquer finishing methods while developing skills that can be applied to fine furniture, vessels and other handcrafted wooden objects.
