Technique: Repairing a broken vessel (kake)

Kintsugi (golden joinery) is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold or silver. This ancient art form based on the of Wabi-Sabi philosophy of embracing the flawed or imperfect. Highlighting the cracks and repairs as simply an event in the life of an object rather than allowing its service to end at the time of its damage or breakage.

This September, JTA welcome back Ai Shimizu, a Kyoto-based Kintsugi practitioner who is already a part of the JTA family. She has painstakingly developed the Kintsugi SEED kit which has now been enjoyed by our customers. Ai-san has exhibited her work in Japan and internationally, as well as teaching throughout Japan and France.

In this session you will repair a vessel that has broken into two pieces. This technique is used when a vessel has broken, but all of the fragments are present. The pieces are carefully reassembled using natural lacquer (urushi) then the join lines are highlighted with metallic powder. Rather than hiding the break, the repaired seams become a beautiful feature.

Workshops will be held at the JTA Showroom with all materials included.
