When: Sat 15th + Sun 16th, March, 2025

JTA is excited to welcome artist Roslyn Kean back to our workshop in 2025.

Roz will be running a 2 day workshop in our showroom sharing her expertise in traditional Japanese woodblock printing.

Over the 2 days the following will be covered:

  • An introduction viewing original old and contemporary Japanese prints to appreciate techniques used.
  • Various methods of transfer of image onto the block
  • Explanation of traditional registration method for multi-block prints
  • Carving instructions in both Japanese shina blocks and Russian Birch
  • Proofing the block with carbon paper rubbings
  • Inking techniques - pigment and water, watercolours and gouache
  • Baren techniques - understanding the different types of barens
  • Introduction to printing on Japanese Washi papers
  • Sharpening of tools (if time permits)

Students will ultimately walk away with A4 sized prints of their chosen design and a deeper understanding of the art of Mokuhunga.

More about Roslyn Kean:

Following Post Graduate studies in printmaking at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL London in 1976 -78 and during a lectureship at The Slade research work was undertaken at the British Museum in the field of Traditional Japanese Woodblock prints.

In 1985 Roslyn was awarded a Japanese Monbusho scholarship providing two years graduate research at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts in the field of Mokuhanga.

Since 1988 Roslyn has specialised in Japanese printing techniques and has taught extensively in Australia and the UK. Her work is strongly linked to Japanese aesthetic and philosophy.
